I picked up the first issue of the The Last Magazine today and I’m pretty convinced that this is the best magazine I’ve seen all year. Im a huge fan of minimalism when it comes to design and editorial and how simplicity can completely put emphasis on content and let it speak for itself. simplicity and minimalism are nothing new in editorial, but I thought they executed this style beautifully and unique with the magazines large format, huge photos that bleed off the pages, subtle use of bold type, and the newsprint they use to make it with really makes this stand apart from the rest of the selection. I dont suggest trying to look through it at the magazine stand (the photos don’t show it but the magazine is like 4 times as big as a normal magazine!) I can sum it up as an instant classic! have a look…
I had the opportunity to check out the annual pdn photoplus event here in Manhattan today. It was my first time attending an event like this and it was pretty neat! I really liked the overall event because not only could you see the new stuff on the horizon, but people were also doing in depth demonstrations and tutorials in which I actually ended up learning a fair bit from. some of the highlights to me were checking out the new 24P Nikon SLR with a focus puller, matte box, and monitor mechanism setup, the telephoto lenses Nikon had on display to use, the new Leica DLUX 4 with a hot shoe, and the Leica booth in general!
I think banksy commisioned a team of proffessional banner painters to do this… Either way it’s a great piece.
Lately I’ve been more hyped on Brooklyn than the city it seems like, I don’t know, maybe it’s because of the lack of the mid to upper class white moms pushing their thousand dollar strollers around acting better than everyone, or it could just be the whole upper east side in general! Hahaha anyway Brooklyn seems way better for now!
Today I met up with Ben Wolf and Hillman Curtis in Brooklyn to assist with a shoot they are doing promoting the Obama campaign. Its going to be a ten second spot and its going to play on the 3 story jumbo-tron in Times Square in the days ahead leading up to the election! It will also be up on the homepage of hillmancurtis.com in a few days for everyone to check out. They shot on the RED cam and it was actually my first time seeing one in person and they are the real deal! Being on set and witnessing a Hillman Curtis directed piece was definitely a treat, I’ve been a huge fan of their work for years, and I feel very privileged to contribute! thanks again guys! here is one pic, I shot more but I still have like 25 exposures in the roll.
